Wedding Cake Orders

How much does a wedding and/or groom cake cost?
The total cost of a cake depends on various factors, such as – servings needed, decoration detail, cake flavor, and /or filling, type of icing and delivery.  A consultation is necessary to provide an accurate cost of a cake.  Most of our wedding cakes range in price from $350 - $800.  A small wedding cake can start at $250 and a large, elaborate cake can start at $1500. Keep your cake budget in mind when selecting a design and/or flavors.

Is there a minimum serving count for a wedding cake and groom cake order from your shop?
The smallest wedding cake size we offer is 75 servings (3-tier).  From our experience 2-tier wedding cakes are too small for any type of venue.  We do offer 2-tier groom cakes (minimum serving count is 50).  The groom cake is normally an accent cake to the bridal cake.

Do I have to have a groom cake?
No, a groom cake is optional with us.  However, in our area, 7 of 10 wedding cake orders include a groom cake.

How far in advance do I need to book my wedding cake?
The sooner the better! Get it off your “to-do” list and onto our calendar! More and more  wedding cake orders are booked up to a year in advance for peak months of May, June & October.  April and August are two additional months showing a wedding trend.   Friday night weddings are also becoming popular. Since space is limited, we recommend that you book your cake as soon as your date and reception site have been secured.

Do we sign a contract and pay a deposit?
To secure and confirm a wedding cake order, $100 (non-refundable) deposit and contract are required.  Remaining balance must be received 2 weeks before delivery date. Unfortunately, we cannot hold a date without a deposit.  If payment has not been received, we reserve the right to refuse your order.

What forms of payment do you accept?
At this time we accept cash, VISA and MasterCard (credit or debit) only.

What if I paid the non-refundable deposit or I have paid my cake in full, then a family member or friend wants to pay for my cake as a gift to me, will you refund my money and then accept payment from the person offering the gift?
In this case Takes the Cakes does not refund the money.  The transaction will have to happen between you and the person offering the gift.

Is there a delivery charge?
Delivery & set-up charges start at $45.00 and are based on venue’s physical address. Holiday and Sunday deliveries are subject to a $40 surcharge in addition to delivery fee.

Can I pickup my cake?
No,  our cakes must be delivered by us.  The delivery of a wedding/groom cakes should be handled by those with experience.

How much do you charge for a Wedding Cake Consultation?
Simply give us a call at 469-467-9620 or email to schedule a FREE consultation.   During peak wedding cake season, Saturday appointments may not be available.  Call or email for availability.  Consultations are by appointment only.

May I sample your cakes?
At your consultation basic cake flavors such as vanilla cake and French vanilla with butter cream icing and a chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream icing will be available for tasting.

By pre-ordering, you can taste other flavors for $15 per six inch cake and any left-over cake is yours to take home.  If your wedding cake is booked with us, the first $15 you spend will be deducted from your cake order. All our cakes are baked by order only so we don’t have cakes baked ahead of time.

How many friends and/or family members can I bring to the cake tasting appt.?
Our shop space is limited so we can accommodate up to four people.  We make every effort to have enough cake samples for four people, however be advised, that may not always be the case – especially if we have multiple appointments in one day.  The bride and groom have priority in the tasting.

How many wedding cakes do you book for a weekend?
Quality over quantity is our motto, so we limit the amount of wedding cakes to one to three cakes per weekend depending on cake(s) sizes and reception location.  Our orders are on a “first-come, first-basis.”  Orders can only be secured with a deposit payment and contract signing.  Emails or phone calls are not enough to secure a date.

How much cake should I order?
Normally a good rule of thumb is “total number of guests x 1.5 = total # of servings. This number is a good high end number.  Then you can decide from there how to order.  If it’s just a “cake and punch” reception then you want to order at the high end.  If it’s a buffet meal then a lower count cake may be enough.  If it’s formal sit-down meal, then enough cake shouldbe ordered for each guest.  In this case, the cake is served to each guest in the same manner the entrée is served.

Do you arrange fresh flowers on my wedding cake?
We can arrange the pre-assembled flowers left by the florist for an additional prepaid fee of $25.  Otherwise, your florist is responsible for the arranging and placing of the flowers.

What are kitchen cakes?
Kitchen cakes are minimally decorated and served from the kitchen.  Kitchen cakes are only available when a 3-tier bridal cake is not enough.  Not available with orders less 100 servings.

Are fresh flowers included?
No, fresh flowers are ordered through your florist.

Should I use colors on my wedding cake?
Although your cake should reflect your personality, we recommend using colors sparingly.  For a classic wedding cake, use fresh flowers or bows and ribbons to accent your cake and include your wedding colors.  If you would like us to match a color, a 2x2 inch color swatch is necessary.

Can I get different flavor with each tier?
Yes, each tier can be a different flavor and/or filling. However, there is extra charge depending on the flavors.  Keep in mind, if you have too many choices your guests may decide to sample more than one flavor leaving you with not enough cake for your total guest count.

How big is a serving size of wedding cake?
Servings are industry sizes of 1 ½  inch wide by 4 inches high and 2 inches deep.  Final outcome of servings depends on the experience of cake cutter and sharpness of cutting utensils.

Who cuts the cake(s)?
Check with your caterer or venue, some of them will provide this service free of charge while others charge a small fee.

Can I make changes after I order the cake?
Changes  in size, flavors and decorations can be made up to four weeks before the wedding.  A lot of planning and purchasing of supplies and equipment go into preparing for your cake. We are not able to make any changes to the final order after the four week deadline.  If changes are significant an amendment to contract or new contract will be necessary.
